New Year's Eve

New Year's Eve in Kyoto!
Japanese eat "soba" (buckwheat noodles) on New Year's Eve--long noodles for a long life--
when in Japan, do as the Japanese...
We went to a temple to ring in the new year, literally. After some sing-songy chants by the monks, warm drinks, and mikans, hundreds of us waited to ring a giant bell as the clock rang midnight.
Strangely, it felt more like Disneyland than a religious ceremony with people giving instructions on where to stand & where to go next, with a monk in position to take pictures of each party as they rang the bell. Happy 2007, Year of the Wild Boar!
